Here is what and had to say about it. I also watched an episode of Mythbusters that dealt with this very subject and they concluded after many experiments in many different conditions that the story is false. I will try to find a transcript of the episode or something.

I do not drive here in DC, but in california the gas stations post warning signs against using cell phones. I always wondered why but consistently ignored the warnings. Nothing has ever happened to me, so I figure it's a measure to prevent an individual from suing the gas station for anything that might happen.
Which leads me to a question, why do we have to turn off cell phones while flying? It's not like you're going to get service anyway, but because I am ignorant regarding most things technical, does anybody know?

I have actually heard the no cell phones in gas stations thing but kind of just figured they want you to pay attention to pumping your gas and leaving, not talking on the phone.

I've also heard a variation on this story where you are not supposed to use cell phones near microwaves.

In regard to the cellphone while flying thing, twice I have accidentally left my phone on during flights. I haven't actually made or received calls, but both were definitely safe flights, no issues at all.

Yea the flying thing is somewhat bogus.. It's pretty insane to think the cell phone might bring the plane down... Actually, though they say it "could" interfere with navigation. I can believe that
